DRAGONDEER OPENS AN 80s TIME CAPSULE FOR HALLOWEEN NIGHT SHOW AT CERVANTES’
Break out your moon boots and sweatbands—Dragondeer is digging out the 80s time capsule to celebrate Dance Party 1983 on Halloween night at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom. Presented by Color Red, 105.5 The Colorado Sound, Native Roots, Buffalo Exchange, and Topo Designs, the one-of-a-kind show will travel back in time to a musical era that knows no bounds and present an eclectically curated catalog of music.
Inspired by touring around in a Chevy van equipped with Sirius XM, the band found themselves traipsing through the broad-spanning airwaves and often falling upon programming that included yacht rock, early glimpses of metal, new wave, and a healthy mix of some of the 80’s most storied dance floor hits and guilty pleasures. While discussing a theme for this year’s Halloween show, they observed that so much good music came out of the early 80s—hits like Prince’s “1999,” The Clash’s “Rock the Casbah,” Chaka Khan, Lionel Richie, Metallica, British new wave, the advent of hip-hop and more thus, the concept of “Dance Party 1983” was born.
“We started to look at the era and realized so many things came out of 1983,” remarks bassist Casey Sidwell, “We want to recreate a dancefloor experience and present a set that a DJ would spin circa 1983”
Music lovers from all walks of life will find something that suits their palate at the show. It’s a full-spectrum 80s experience and a wardrobe that includes Robert Smith eyeliner, white tennis shoes, globs of hairspray, leg warmers, spray-painted jeans, moon boats, sweatbands, and cutoff gloves is highly encouraged. The repertoire ventures outside of Dragondeer’s signature swampy blues-funk sound and showcases the expansive musical backgrounds of members Eric Halborg, Cole Rudy, Casey Sidwell, and Carl Sorensen.
Following in the footsteps of their 2018 Halloween tribute to David Bowie, the band will bring some of Denver’s finest musicians in tow as special guests throughout the night. These guests include Jordan Linit of Analog Son, Mikey Smith on keyboards (a Denver jazz scene icon who founded The Meadowlark jazz jam), Jonny Jyemo of Jyemo Club, and Venus Cruz, local legend and host of KUVO’s Wednesday night ‘Jazzy Odyssey’ program. Cruz’s original project What Young Men Do will open the night.
